'We need to tell people' about Vietnam

As long as he lives, Hogan Bryan will remember the moment he landed in Saigon, Vietnam.

It was 1966 and he was a carefree, young Army lieutenant whose poor vision had killed his dream of flying a Huey. He was headed for the 339th Transportation Company but didn’t know what he’d really be doing.

“You get off that plane, and I’ll never forget the heat, the immense heat,” recalls Bryan, who is 67 now and enjoying retirement on Okaloosa Island with his wife, Linda. “It was buildings and trucks and tents and airplanes. It was phenomenal.”

Photos on Vietnam’s former capitals exhibited

An open-air photo exhibition on Vietnam’s former capitals has opened in the midland province of Phu Tho. About 200 photos selected from 1,000 works take by domestic and foreign photographers provide an overview on five Vietnamese typical ancient capitals, including Van Lang in Phu Tho, Hoa Lu in Ninh Binh, Lam Kinh-Thanh Hoa, Hue of Thua Thien-Hue and Thang Long-Hanoi.

The exhibition, running until April 23, is part of activities to welcome the national commemoration of Hung Kings death and the 1,000th founding anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

After being displayed in the Hung Temple, the photos will be showcased at Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi on the occasion of the millennium anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

Photo exhibition by disabled Vietnamese in Germany

Face to Face is a photographic project for disabled people in Thanh Hoa province, which was organised in summer 2008 by the German Development Service Organisation (DED) and Schmitz Foundation, assisted by German senior photographer Paul Zetter.

After a five-month training course, 16 disabled people in Thanh Hoa used eight digital cameras to take more than 8000 photos about their communities. Several seminars were held during this time for trainees to exchange photographic techniques, communicate with each other and take photo together.

Ninety photos were chosen for exhibitions. A documentary was produced, describing the life of Huong, a disabled girl in Thanh Hoa, a member of this project. read more>>

Photographers show their love via black-and-white photos

Members of Hai Au club for female photographers will introduce black-and-white pictures about Vietnam’s people, landscape and specialties at the Da Lat Cadasa Resort in Da Lat from April 2 to May 2.

Established in 1990, Hai Au club has chosen 65 pictures for the upcoming exhibition to celebrate Da Lat Liberation Day (3.4/1975) and the country’s union (30/4/1975).

Hai Au is the first photography club for women in Vietnam. With 15 members who share a passion for photography, the club has organized many exhibitions and won over 100 international awards and many local prizes. The club also contributes to Vietnam’s photography circles with outstanding talents like Dao Hoa Nu, An Dung and Hong Nga.

The club will bring around 100 photos to an exhibition in Hanoi in late August to celebrate the city’s 1000^th anniversary.

Halong Tourism Festival to kick off next month

The Halong Tourism Festival 2010 will take place in the northern border province of Quang Ninh from April 29 to May 2. Visitors to the event will have an opportunity to participate in various activities, such as a beauty pageant, a photo exhibition of Halong Bay, a concert, boat-racing, a music performance and fireworks display.

A trade fair and an annual conference on the world’s most beautiful bays will also be held.

Currently, Quang Ninh Province is completing preparatory work for the festival in many resort areas, such as Bay Chay Beach and Mong Cai border gate. The province has invested nearly VND40 billion to build a large stage at Bay Chay Beach as a major venue for the opening ceremony of the festival.

Halong Bay has been twice recognised by UNESCO as the World Heritage for its natural beauty and geology.
